My interest in art is focused on the traditional and classical painters and photographers. As I studied photography, it soon became clear that the early processes where technique and hands-on crafts was what I loved to do. The early pictorial images were where my attention turned. These kinds of images lead me to learn alternative processes.
After seeing my first Bromoil print, I knew this method would give me the control over the image I desired in my work. It had the ability to change the traditional effects of a Bromoil image to a modern expressive print.
Working with Bromoil makes each print an individual piece since no two prints from the same negative will have exactly the same markings or tones.
My work is done in 4x5 polaroid film. Bromoil is a bromide paper print that has been tanned by bleaching. After bleaching it is then soaked in water so that the gelatin swells. It is then inked with lithographic type inks. It is at this point that the print becomes expressive, since it is worked to produce an individual piece.
Prints are in editions of five, although the color and markings may vary in each print.
Prices for Joy's images are $800 for 9" x 12" prints and $1500 for 13" x 17" prints. Her work is limited to an edition of 5 in each size. Prints are matted to an overall dimension of 16" x 20" or 20" x 24", respectively. Please inquire with the gallery for the availability of the photograph you are interested in.
